Bosnian Haystacks

One of the most abundant and striking features of the BiH landscape is the haystack. Formed from dried hay, they are constructed in late summer and used to feed livestock throughout the harsh winters.

Once the hay is dry a hole is dug in the ground and a large stake placed inside it. The base is formed of branches and the hay piled around the stake. Of varying size, some are works of art with elegant profiles, while others look as though rather too much of the home-brewed slivo has been imbibed. A large one will take two or three people three days to build and supply enough hay to last 20 or so sheep and the family cow a month.
